This is a mini I made in early 2022. It’s a story I’ve been kicking around for a while, and I finally got it in an order I could work with. This is my first big foray into properly using my digital art tools, after having them for years. I drew all the line art in pencil and then scanned that in for digital work, doing new lines, colors, inks, and letters. I did this in Affinity Designer, for those interested. It’s hard for me to get a handle on, because I never used another art program before, so it’s a lot less “intuitive” from my perspective; I need to know how the whole thing works top to bottom if I’m going to wrap my head around it, and I still don’t know what “raster” means. I’m not sure I’ll ever get to the point I can work entirely digitally, and for now that’s fine. I’m really happy with how this turned out, production wise, and it’s motivated me to try out more of what Affinity has to offer.

This is my first 16 page book, and I really wanted to challenge myself to use the pages more boldly. Mostly, the big splash on page 13, I guess, but I hadn’t done one before. I also used more angles than I have in the past and gave myself more settings to design. I think the reading lines are a lot clearer here than in previous work, and I was able to use more diverse layouts and things, which helped me a lot in presentation.

This is a story I thought of after reading the synopsis of Breasts Are My Favorite Things in the World (still haven’t read it, would like to try it out, seems like it could go either way). Basically, the story idea I ended up with boils down to two shallow people lucking into a mutually beneficial relationship. I have this tendency to get really into my characters’ heads, like all up in their deepest thoughts and anxieties and such, and then all the fun, silly stories I want to draw end up super duper cereal; with YAS, I managed to stay fun and light the whole way through, and that’s probably my biggest victory here, artistically. Besides the pun Britt ends on.
